Prior to 1913 automobiles were either totally hand built or were what was known as "assembled cars" because they were "assembled" from parts ordered from other car manufacturers. "Assembled cars" were built by 2-3 mechanics in an average of 12 1/2 hours. In 1913 Henry Ford introduced the world's first moving assembly line which allowed for a larger team of mechanics to assemble a car from stockpiled parts. Each worker accomplished one particular task and then passing the car along to the next person in the line.
